I bought a very nice '87 automatic (130k miles) to learn to road race in. After two events, I wish it were a manual. I can buy: clutch, flywheel, bellhousing, clutch linkage, clutch hydraulics, pedal assembly, shifter, console, driveshaft, transmission, overdrive unit, trans wiring harness for $800.00. Was working fine at time of removal, 100,000 miles on trans. Is this an OK deal? Any parts missing? Will an ECM reprogram be required?

As you may not want the auto O/d function when racing anyway ,there are ways to rewire it so you have complete manual control ; not the ECM.

While the 4+3 is a good tranny for street use and even autocross, the OD unit will not hold up to the rigors of road racing. I do use my 87 for track days but I do not use the OD unit. I can hit speeds of 125-128 in 4th but that is about the limit of the motor (slightly modded).

For track use, You might want to consider a Keisler 5-speed or a Richmond Gear 6-speed. There are units available that are designed specifically for bolt-in for Vettes. Some have installed T-56's or ZF 6-speeds.

Another thing to consider is that the automatic trans cars used a Dana D36 differential, the manual tranny cars used the stronger D44.

You might find it cheaper and quicker in the long run to find an 89 6-speed car that needs some work. You would have a good base to start from, the clutch and electronics stuff is already there.

You will also be able to upgrade the brakes easier, it comew with 17x9.5" wheels and larger tires and the Z51 suspension is great for entry-level track use and autocross. VB&P has some very good suspension stuff for the 89 and later cars that are not available for the early years.
