I turned on the AC today, compressor engaged, fan blew, but barely cool, and it is normally very cold in even the hottest weather instantly.
This is the first time I have used since last summer.
I guess I have a leak? I have never had any AC problems in all these years. What should I check? I looked under the hood and didn't see anything unusual of course.
Is the blower door working correct, i.e. can you set warm and it is realy coming warm?
If yes maybe you are only low on R12/R413/R134 (it´s of course not empty because in this case the the pressure switch should cut the AC down)
Some basic easy things to check. Look to see if the compressor is excessively cycling. On and off every 10 seconds or so is bad. A few times a minute is OK. Grab the fat A/C pipe from the evaporator case back to the Accumulator and see how cold it feels. Should be real cold after a minute or so.
If that s all good, take a look in the evaporator case by removing the blower control module. Look with a flashlight, have someone else cycle the temp control from 60 to 90 and see if the door swings both way. If the blend door is stuck it might not deliver cold air to the vents.
Go to Advance / Zone, and buy a Mickey Mouse gauge / refill kit.
For doing routine check 'n' re-charge, they do the job. Although you really cannot trust the gauge, you can get relative measurements of the pressure (before, after one can, after 2 cans).
ed.:
Tomorrow, I'm gonna' do a 1-can re-charge. I'll get pics and post up...
Whoa! If the compressor isn't cycling (turning on and off) and there's no low gas code, it doesn't need refrigerant and trying to cram 10 lbs of potatoes into a 5 lb sack is foolish. Disconnect and reconnect the battery first as that will get rid of any glitches in the Controller. Then pull the Blower Module on the left side of the Evaporator Case and look inside to see the Temp Door. It should move as someone cycles the Controls between 60 and 90. If it doesn't, the motor that controls it probably has a stripped gear - particularly if it you can hear it running and nothing is moving.
I put the heater on the other night and it came out very hot, even when it was still 85 deg. out. Wouldn't this show that the door is working? (as suggested in post #4)
Anyone have experience with the hole sealents in a can for the AC?
Do they work or gunk up the system?
The compressor does come on like usual as far as I can tell, so I think it just lost most of the refrigerant.
