I have an 87. The fuel pump quit. Should I replace it with a 50 psi, 16gph or a 28 psi, 43.5 gph and why. Also the fuel pump assembly is rusted and has contaminated the tank with rust. I would like to clean the tank without removing. Is there a good way to do this? Thanks for any and all help.
You need a 43#(pressure not gph) pump. Thats what the car had stock. If the motor has mods get a Walbro from Racetronics. It will have more gph at the correct pressure.
I should have been more clear. The regulator actually controls the pressure. Not the pump. But my point is if the car is stock, get a stock pump. They are pretty inexpensive and easy to install. The Racetronics Walbro, costs more but is capable of more volume and is a direct replacement.

If there is rust in the tank you will need to remove it to take care of that. You would be better off buying a used or repro. But you can buy some goo to coat the inside of the tank and seal the rust.
Thanks for the info. The gas tank has a plastic liner. The rust formed on the fuel pump assembly and contaminated the tank. Is there a good way to clean it? I would prefer not to take it out if i don't absolutely have to.
