My 89 auto is set at 6-BTDC. Some suggest it be set at 8-BTDC. What improvement or differences can you expect. What positive by changing the setting, what negative, anything of significance?
Timing changes will vary in outcome based on modifications and general tune up condition of the car. Each car is different. My 85 likes (enjoys) 8-10*. Make the change, drive it and see if you like it. Easy change and can always reverse it. Not like bolting on heads.

Advancing base timing will give snappier throttle response; the danger is that you may get knock counts during at WOT burst at higher RPM.
A scanner will tell the tale on the knock counts.
I had been running 10deg BTDC but recently dropped back to 6deg due to observed knock retard. I now notice that throttle response off idle is not nearly as snappy.
