Default 383 guys...

I have a question for all you with a 383....

I'm leaning 383, however, I want a motor that is "snappy", almost two stroke like.

I am concerned the 383 will not provide that type of performance....

Can you tell me about yours, do you have that two stroke type "punch" throughout the RPM curve?

That's why I started to consider a 377, a destroked 400, since from everything I know tends to be a "snappy" motor throughout the RPM range.

Thanks for the opinions.

UH.....is this snappy enough for ya (watch the video in my signiture) My motor revs like a weed eater.

If you build a well built 383 with light valve train, a good set of heads, and a matched cam, you will love it. When I wasn't getting traction on street tires I could bounce mine off the Rev limiter very quickly.

I'm not totally sure what you mean, but my 383 gets to 350 ft*lbs by 3000 RPM, and to it's torque peak (~400 RW) at 3500 RPM. That's pretty snappy.

Won't your rear gears have more effect on this feeling than displacement?

I can't speak for any other 383's, but mine has scary fast punch across the RPM curve. It does 60 feet in just inder 1.55 seconds. That's an acceleration of over 1.5 g's. In second gear, it just keeps accelerating at an exhilirating rate. Does the eighth mile in 7.4 seconds. Frightens my passengers.

I was told mine sounds like a racecar when I rev it. I don't have any timeslips or vids, but when you rev it, it gets to the redline (6500 for me) quick. It will give you the feeling your looking for if you stick with what 96lt4c4 said.

I have also thought of going to a 377. I think it would perform well under a miniram, but I'll stick with the 383 until its time for forced induction.

Tim that Vid clip of your monster running brought tears to my eyes. If that thing doesn't sound like a MONSTER!.........WOW. What was surprising to me was how quiet it was when you were off axis of the motor compartment. Walking around the front of the hood the motor wasn't that loud. and quite until you were directly behind it again. What double roller timing chain did you run, and did you keep the stock timing chain cover (LT4) and reluctor ring, or use something else? Awesome car and I see that your the 16th of May, I'm the 17th!

I am running this chain, with no ring, electric water pump and a jegs keyed balancer hub.

383's will make more torque do to a few reason but one major reason is the stroke is longer, ie its got more leverage to turn the crank.

There are so many ways to build a 383, from low-end torque beasts to high-RPM screamers. If you want a "2-stoke like" motor you'll probably like the high-RPM type more. Use a light-weight rotating assembly, and valve-train (shaft rockers preferably), get an aluminum flywheel to let the engine rev as quickly as possible. Mine is built-similar to this and it's a blast to drive!!

383 is the way to go! Torque is king on the street. I learned my lesson from those small displacement high revving motors. They destroy automatic transmissions if you shift past 7000.

Here is a link to a 383 we built a while back and we have seen the same results with a well prepared set of Vortec heads and torque is KING.

Here's that link http://www.chevelles.com/forums/show...highlight=DYNO

I have a 383 Super Ram track car. Hp and torque next to 500 (flywheel). 3:73, alum flywheel, etc. Revs very fast. Can run over 6500 rpm. Rev limiter set at 6200. Hopefully it's bulletproof. Built by Cottrell Racing Engines (TPIS). Believe me, jsup, it will snap your *** right up.

Your

I told him that already. I also still don't know what a "two-stroke" feeling is.

Yes my combo below is snappy, but I think you'd want a mini-ram/LT1 intake and bigger cam...if I understand what you mean when you say "two-stroke feeling"
