Going home from work today I pass a slow truck and get on it pretty good. At 5000RPM car fells like it goes into neutral then revs up to 6200 or there abouts then shifts. The car is a 1992 auto with 2.59 rear and has 101000 miles. If the tranny is failing is there a good place to buy one and what mods would you include ie torque convertor Thanks Randy
The answer to this would be decided by what you plan to do witht he car in the future. If you just plan to use the car for a daily driver with no major mods, just get it rebuilt at a reputable local shop. If you want an all out rebuild I would look into art carr or another one of the good aftermarket tranny/race shop type rebuilds. Hardened shafts, converter, better clutches, higher line pressure, etc.
Is it the 2 to 3 shift?
That will help pin down the area of trouble, but it sounds like the 3/4 clutches are going away.
As for Mods I haven't done any but it looks like for a stock to slightly built motor the 700R4 is a good thing with out a lot of build, just make sure the trans tech knows his stuff, and from all the posts on converters it looks like somewhere between a 2400 to 2800 stall is the ticket for makin the car more 'responsive' off the line, course you'll probably have some traction issues with that :)
The problem occured between 2nd and 3rd. I was looking to have a top end package installed in Jan 2002 by Moreperformance then. If this tranny is toast who other than Art Carr do you recommend. There is a company in Louisana that does 700R4 trannys but I cant remember their name and I think they call their tranny the rapture or beast. Any imput would be helpful Randy
