If you ever get a car repainted, change the oil and air filter ASAP when you get home.
I never thought of this until recently...do you realize how much sanding DUST gets in the air filter?I couldnt believe how much sanding dust had collected inside the air filter housing and openings.
Ive been sanding down my 86 to prep it for paint and the amount of dust that collected in the hood and bumper opening was unreal.
With my open air lid mod, it was even more so at the filter.
If anyone has ever sanded with a 15+ inch file board, you know more so what im talking abut.It doesnt kick the dust in the air like a DA sander does.
So it dawned on me that its probably a good idea to change your oil and clean (K&N equipped)or replace the air filter right after getting your Vette back from a body shop or paint job, especially if the hood was redone.
I can imagine a bit of that crap gets sucked into the engine when its running.
Using compressed air to blow the dust out of tight places helps alot too.I had a cloud coming out from under the hood when using compressed air to clean.

I had that problem with a Camaro I had painted. It ran great before the paint job, but on the way home after all the work it ran like crap. Went through the car cleaning and changing the oil and plugs and it ran great again.

Excellent suggestion. I worked around body shops and the dust is unbelievable. no matter how hard you try to keep the shop/area clean, there is still plenty of dust.
Thanks for the replies guys...Im glad noticed this when I did and wanted to pass it along as a precaution.Ive been seeing alot of posts here and there about cars getting paint and body work so its prob. just cheap insurance to check into.
:)
Re: A Tech Suggestion For Everyone... (Bill's86Coupe)
Great tip. :) I'm sure it'll apply also to a car in a garage next to another car having some body work done on it.... even if Greg's plan is to back my running vette out when he works on the '65. :jester
A M E N!!! Mine had pink dust (The red and the clear made pink)all over the place. I changed the oil as soon as I got the car in one piece, and cleaned the air filter. TONS of dust gets everywhere. I can't count how many nights I came home from the body shop covered in dust. Blew pink from my nose for two days!
Thanks for the replies everyone!
Jd,
I was LOL about the pink dust...man Ive been sanding the car in the car port outside the kitchen door..all our socks have turned pink somehow..hehe..dust got everywhere and kept forgetting to take shoes off in the house.
Been tracking some of that dust in here.
I bought a Noishu mask with dual filters to use when sanding..the regular dust mask wont cut it..with this mask,no more pink noses.
Its amazing how a red car turns pink when you sand it down eh?It was 10 times worse for my car because it was repainted over red once before above the belt line,so theres many layers to sand through.
I dont think this dust will ever be completely gone...its going to end up in places ya cant clean and every once in a while suprise ya and blow out the air vents or something.
:)
