My C4 has been reliable and starts instantly every time I turn the key.. It started fine earlier today but by evening I went to start it and it wouldn't fire up. I pushed the accelerator down and it fired up but acted like it was running on 7 cylinders and would not hold an idle. What's really strange is that I smell an excessive amount of fuel. Does anyone have an idea what the poblem could be. I'm not sure if it's a fuel problem or a spark timing problem. This car is driven with love and the problem I am experience came on suddenly with no warning. Anyone experienced any thing like this?

If you smell fuel you have to have something LEAKING! The fact that you turning it over and having to pump the accel. sounds like the pressure is bleeding off. Check the valley pan/intake and the front for a fuel leak have someone turn the key on and look but be ready to turn it off QUICK don't wnat a FIRE$%$%#. Good Luck wro87
Maybe a ruptured fuel reg diaphragm. Check the reg's vacuum line for fuel.
That fact that it started with the pedal depressed (puts computer into flood mode) indicates excessive fuel. Bad injector(s) or a short to ground in injector wiring, could also be possible.
