I have n 1988 with a 4+3 manual transmision but it seems as though I have a 4+4. sometimes when I'm in 1st gear and stomp on it, it drops down into a low range is this a freak transmission or what?
Not real sure about this, but I believe 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears have the overdrive funtion, 4th is overdrive, no extra gear for it, could be wrong though.

Not positive about this(I was smart enough to purchase the auto on my new L86 C4 Coupe), but I believe the early C4 '4+3' Manuals, had the electric overdrives on 2,3rd and 4th only, not at all on 1st gear.
My 4+3 would do that once in a while. If it was in O.D. and you
downshift to 1st it stayed in O.D. for a moment then switched to
direct. Kinda weird til you get used to it. Benny

Yeah, I think you're right. Why have an overdrive for first gear? So you can cruise 8 mph?
Thank so much for the info, that really explains it well.so far the tranny has been working very well. one of the first thing I did when I bought the car was have it serviced, car has 55,000 miles and I am enjoying it.
Thanks again

The 86 thru 88 4+3 will engage OD in 1st gear if OD is already ON and you downshift into 1st. Read here.
That information that is posted on the link I grabbed from the original service manual for the 4+3. The 86 is the only year to depend on complete logic with lack of switches....
