Save me some hassle
) and the compressor spinning on a 90^ day fried my a/c compressor clutch. It grabs occasionally but slips too often, may be just glazed over but I think I killed it.
So my question is; do you think its possible to put in a new clutch WITHOUT changing the front seal or evacuating the system? It's full of r-12 and I don't want to go through the hassle if I can avoid it.
Who even sells a/c clutches that will fit? After market is notorious for a/c clutches. It's an '89 6 speed with the auto climate control. Either way I will be doing the work myself, never tore apart a GM compressor before. I just want someone to say " no problem, buy this clutch bolt it on and cruse away"
Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.
First check the clutch gap between the Pressure Plate and the Rotor using a feeler gage.
Should be .02 inches + or - .006 inches
Add or remove shims to get correct gap
Shim kits are available if the measurement is not correct.
Remove negative battery cable.
Release serpentine belt.
Remove shaft bolt.
Remove Pressure Plate.
Shims from the Pressure Plate.
Snap ring securing rotor.
Tap rotor off the shaft using a plastic hammer.
If you're also replacing the Clutch Coil (Stator) remove the snap ring and disconnect the wiring and remove the Stator. May take some prying to get it off the shaft.
*****When you reinstall the shaft bolt, torque to 10 ft. Lbs.******
