Okay...'96 LT4...problem is when making any kind of a turn...left more than right..the power assist drops out and then back in at radom. Sometimes it does this sometimes it doesn't.
Did the turkey baster change-out of fluid today. Old fluid was quite brown and smelled burnt. Made no difference. Used the Valvoline SynPower synth blend...but only was able to get two quarts, so will have to flush it anyways.
Soooo....is the problem in the rack or the pump? How do I find out?
Thanks guys

UPDATE: The steering gets worse as the car is driven. It is actually pretty good when cool....not ever going to be cold here in Tucson at this time of the year

I had the exact same problem in my 95 a couple months ago...purchased the Lucas power steering stop leak and no more issues.
I put some in and drove around, turning the wheel constantly for about 10 minutes. Still had the problem but didn't seem as bad, so I put more in, let it sit for about 30minutes, drove around again turning the wheel constantly in my neighborhood and haven't had any problems since. Pretty sure it's a worn rack issue, and will have to replace eventually but for now it works great.
