Default Just a simple question regarding transmission

I just got a 1995 Coupe Vette with the stock 4spd auto. What I want to do is replace that with a 6spd stick. My question has several parts. First, what kind of labor is involved in switching from the auto to manual (ie. is there any additional engine work or computer work besides putting a new trans and setting up the clutch pedal.) Secondly, would it be better to get a 1995 6spd stick same as the one optional on my car in 1995, or would I be better off getting a new transmission that will fit alright and getting it in there?

And if there is anything you feel worth mentioning from tips to possible problems let me know please.

Not the simplest of questions. Luckily, this topic has been explored substantially on this forum. Use the advanced search function, type in some parameter (i.e. "manual swap" or "auto to manual/stick"). Click C4 tech and performance and archives. Search.

Here is what I found in 1 minute.

The consensus is it is more cost effective and easier to sell your auto and buy a manual. However, it has been done before and IIRC, the only real problem was a chattering sound in reverse (IIRC) and the cost!. If you like the feel of stick and don't mind keeping the auto, rebuild it with a high stall Torque Convertor, Transgo Full Manual Shift Kit (like a manual without a clutch, it will not shift into the next gear until you shift it), and upgrade the transmission internals. (check out my thread - although I'm not doing the full manual option and forum member 'Sliding' has a new post on installing a new shifter and an old one on the actual stick conversion on his automatic).

Good luck with your decision/search,

Jonathan
