Default rear end grumble

My 92 6sp with 58K has just started a periodic rumbling noise (I am the one that grumbles) / vibration that occurs when cornering. Not a good sound! Could it be as simple as needing the fluids changed? Probably not, that would be too simple. How hard is it to change the fluids, the fsm doesn't even mention it. I will be jacking it up (just got the new gadget for the floor jack) in the next two days to see if I can determine any obvious problems. Suggestions on what to do?

Check the wheel bearings. Jack up the car, grab the wheel at the 12 and 6 o clock positions and shake it up and down. If it moves, you probably need new bearings. Like me

Swing the car from side to side going in a straight line. The noise will come and go as it loads up if it's bad bearings.Or jack it up and find out.

It seems from the two of you that bearings could be the source. I will check that out, thanks. I also searched previous posts, and found several people who mentioned changing fluids, particularly when there is a chattering noise. So I think I will go ahead and do that also. It looks like that is best accomplished by getting a cheap pump, draining, then refilling with proper fluids, so I will go ahead and do that one also.

Thanks for the comments.
