Hello I am relacing the optispark and waterpump on a 94 and was wondering if you recommend to replace the case drive seals.
Thank you for your input.
Yes. Most do. Be careful, I believe there is a trick to it. The guy that built my engine made a mistake and I had a pretty good oil leak. He slightly tore the rubber and he put too much grease on the lip. Do a search or two. I did not redo mine but when it was fixed I was told by my mechanic what the other guy did wrong. Someone else will chime in I am sure.
Just replaced the opti and water pump (had it done - it's not for novices) Found out that the water pump was just beginning to weep, but not leaking and that the reason my opti failed was oil spray from the failed seal on the distributor shaft. I didn't help that the water pump shaft seal was leaking also.
Hello all. Thought I'd ask for collective insights before I try a DIY. Looks like I'm into a water pump job (and opti while I'm at it). My concern is that I spotted some oil on garage floor roughly under WP and am wondering about possible causes before I start any work. My '94 LT1 with 60,000mi left me a v. small patch of oil (abt 1 oz ) on garage floor this am. Took it for spin to blow off dust and started to smell coolant. When back home, noticed coolant dripping from under car. Checked under hood and sho'nuff the water pump was leaking. Have read threads on DIY WP and opti and am willing to go at it. The oil spill seems to be roughly below the WP area. Checked oil pan and found it dry all round. Have read a thread or two mentioning oil leak (distributor shaft seal) and would like to ask if others have run into this. Will try to get better look under hood if that is possible to better locate leak. If it is the distr shaft seal, is it doable to replace while WP and opti out? Thx
