Hi all, need some advice on something that just occurred with my 89 Auto (only mods are a high-flow cat and magnaflow cat-back).
About 45 minutes ago, I started it up (it had been warm from recently being driven) drove about 2 minutes and then heard a kind of "clink" noise come from under the hood. Immediately the car lost "some" power, not a lot but enough that it wouldn't down shift into 2nd if I floored it. The exhaust also immediately had a more "throaty" tone to it...kind of hollow sounding.
I drove it about 30 minutes home and all the temps were normal, the loss of power and the exhaust were the only things notable. Got home, checked the oil (thought maybe a possible head gasket) and coolant...both fine. No leaks as far as I can tell.
Any ideas on what it may be? I'm a fairly novice mechanic so I'm really at a loss...
That thought crossed my mind...but could that prevent the car from downshifting? The cat is only about 2 years old with about 5k miles on it....
I don't know about the downshifting. It might if it was losing enough power. To me, it's the change in your exhaust note that makes me believe it's a cat failure. If it fails and creates a clog (too much back pressure) it can rob a lot of power.

Thanks guys for the responses. The more I think about it, the more your analysis sounds correct...because I wasn't able to put it into words, but it felt EXACTLY like there was too much back pressure.

Not normally, but it can cause a change in RPM, failure to shift properly, along with a loss in power.
I'm giving you another possibility that is easy to check.
