The easiest way is with the tail housing removed.
I set a dial caliper to .150 and hold it still while I wiggle the gov back and forth. It gets it pretty close.

So I install the new 5,200 RPM PATC gov and the car shifts at 3,400 RPM. Wow what a dog! I took it out, put the stock weights and springs on, that shifted at 4,500 RPM. So I ground down the weights more, I'm about three tenths of an inch off total and all shifts are around 4,800 RPM now. It looks like if you grind them back near the spring cushion the shifts around be around 5,100 RPM. I'll try that after another mod or two. I haven't found there to be any shifts so far at higher or lower RPM. For example even the 3 to 4 shift was at 4,800 around 120 MPH.

Hmmm. I'm not familiar with that one. I went with a stock GM governor and modified it's weights as the pictures show. Are the weights modifed similiar to mine?

The PATC gov weights were huge square tip ones, not at all like the pointy triangle weights in your pics.

This was done based on Dans0617's recommendation.
Under wot 1-2 shift is now at 5700rpm. 2-3 shift is now at 5500rpm. This is with the stock springs and only removed 1 time. I haven't played with the springs yet. I may take some more material off the weights to see if I can get closer to 6000 with the stock springs.

Thanks Dan!

John
Glad I could help. One thing to be careful with.....I found that making more horsepower makes the shift rpm higher. As in, I set mine up to shift around 6100 or 6150. Then I sprayed a 150 shot and the shift is at about 6250, seen 6300 once. Getting scary on a 97,000 mile stock bottom end You will definitely be able to get 6,000 or even more with the stock springs.

It is amazing how modding the governor wakes up a setup on acceleration. With the big gap from first to second gear in our transmissions, the higher rpm you can get in first the higher your rpms will be when you hit second. My hp peaked at 5600 with a CC503 cam, reworked 113 heads and an HSR intake. My stock catback was strangling me and I was plagued with false knock during dyno so with those problems fixed I would think my peak is up to about 5700 or so.

I used your recommendation, John, to disconnect the brown wire at the esc module to disconnect the spark retard. Works like a charm, thanks!

Good to know. I was thinking it might raise the shift points on the juice. I will leave mine where it is now 5900-6100 n/a. As you know I too spray (150+) so I should be right where I need to be. Glad the ESC ground wire switcch did the trick. I have been using it for years now.

Cheers,
John
