Just a simple question.... Can I trickle charge (2 amp) my '96 with the battery cables still hooked to the car. Is there a possibility of damaging the computer or something? Anything I should know? Just a little paranoid that's all. Thanks
You can trickle charge with the battery cables connected safely. The trickle charger should taper its charge (not 1 or 2 amps continuously) or the acid level will drop and distilled water will have to be added periodically. You can use a timer on your charger set for its minimum duration (usually 15 mins) each day . Don't leave the battery sitting for long periods because the plates sulfate and you will have to replace the battery in the Spring.
Why not just buy a battery Maintainer from Wally Mart. Mine works great. It's a 1.5 amp slow charge that shuts off/on automatically and is small enough to mount in permanently beside the battery. You dont have to disconnect the battery from the car and it wont boil the electrolyte away. They use them in boats to keep the batt at peak charge all the time.
Thanks for the replies. I will have to go get one of those battery maintainers from wally-world.(Walmart is a wonderful place). Have a good day and pray for SPRING..... :D
