I was thinking about buying a similar cable (http://aldlcables.com/) to use on my 93. From my (very limited) research I believe you can scan using this cable directly to a computer. You will need some software, the above link has some screen shots and links to some of the available software titles.

As far as tuning, I don't believe you can modify the programming on the chip with this cable. In fact I think on the OBDI systems you have to pull the chip out of the computer and use a special tool to re-program it. Again, very limited research so I could be wrong.

If you want to get into programming your L98 check out this site.

http://www.moates.net/

If you go for the APU1 or the Ostrich they allow you to do realtime tuning.

If you have a serial port, you can make a cable for less than $5.

The cable alone allows to to monitor and log everything that is going on in the engine using free or bought software.

The Ostrich is a real time tuning interface that allows you to change all the operating parameters of the engine using software on your laptop without having to take the chip out of the ECM and burn a hard tune on it.
Old way.
Write tune on laptop.
take chip out
Erase chip
Write new tune to chip.
Reinstall chip, Drive and log.
Take out and reburn until right.

With Ostrich.
Drive and log.
Pull over and adjust tune.
Easy
Hardest part is working out what you are doing ; lots of research / reading needed.

Some of the easy things to change up front are the VATS delete , change cooling fans ON /OFF temps , change TCC lockup settings.

ECM Tuning 101 is a steep learning curve, lots of info in the sticky's

Thats the cool part. You can make one change and try it. If it doesn't work set it back and try something else. It's not a fix for lack of knowledge but you can try things and get results about 100 times faster than burning chips.

I use Tuner Pro RT to scan, Tuner Cat RT to program (I know I could use TunerPro to program, I just like Tuner Cats interface) and I have a Zeitronix wideband 02. I find an empty industrial park road and drive, stop, change something and try it. In 20min. I might try 50 things. That would take me a week if I had to burn chips.

The other day I wanted to check my base timing. With the Ostrich I just set the advance to 0 in the adavance vs rpm vs load table, set the timing to 6, then restore the table when I was done. No burning my hands disconnecting and reconnecting the connector.

For longer than I would like to admit my ECM has been on the floor so I can change chips. Now I can put the ECM and the Ostrich in the dash and only have the USB cable out.

Sammy , read my post above.
It is a black box ( thats all you need to know ) that connects between your laptop (USB ) and the the ECM that allows the laptop to talk to the ECM using aftermarket software.
