Hey fellas, i have a 95 6 speed with about 82,000. Last weekend i tried to start it and nothing but a clung. Then on the second try it started up. It seems to be getting worse because this morning it took 3 or 4 times before it started. No codes, it seems to start up no problem when car is up to temp. Just wondering if it is the starter. Anybody that can give me an idea what it might be, would be greatly appreciated. Just wanted to know if i can't get it started to bring to the shop can i pop start the car? Thanx guys
Sounds like it could be the starter. Has it been dragging lately when you try and turn it over? Only way to test it on the car is to get at the starter with a voltmeter and check for voltage where the + battery cable connects to it and at the "S" terminal on your solenoid.
No, a bad starter won't throw a trouble code. You can try lightly hitting the starter with a hammer or something to see if the armature frees up. Yes, you can jump start the car if it's a stick.
Also, you're better off keeping all the starter related questions in one thread. You mentioned in another thread that you just replaced your battery. I'd check all your battery cable connections and those on the starter, too.
Measure the battery terminal voltage during cranking. It must not fall below 9.0 volts or the battery cable connections need cleaning/tightening, the battery is discharged, or the battery is at the end of its life. The state of battery charge can be told by measuring the battery voltage under no load. 12.0 volts and below, discharged, charge up overnight with a battery charger. 12.9 volts and above, fully charged and linear in between.
Since it took several trials to get the starter to crank, my money is on the starter. The starter solenoid at the end of its stroke forces two large copper contacts together that switch starter current to the starter motor. Over time these contacts get burned and pitted and become unreliable. If you keep banging them together by hitting ,"crank", position on the ign sw, this makes the contacts make good connection for a while. You can replace the contacts or install another starter motor.
