I have a C5 and love it, but with the prices of the C4 I have gotten to thinking about buying one as a dedicated race car (I’m about 3 miles from Summit Point). I’ve always loved the look of the C4, & I’m trying to talk myself into something
So what would be needed to make a decent HPDE car of the C4? I’m thinking wheels & tires, roll bar, lighter seats, oil cooler, new shocks or coilovers, what else??
With the prices now they are great race cars. I would upgrade the sway bars, new poly bushings, coil overs, strip the interior, put in anaolg gauges, Drive shaft hoop, oil cooler, targa brace, and cutom roll cage. good luck
depends on what year it is. But Catless exhaust with lt headers would save weight and make power. lexan top if not a vert. There is a huge variance in springs so coilovers may or may not be needed. Some of the stiffer springs would really be nice with an adjustable shock. However, Coilovers hands down will make front ride height changes less painful and precise. I still have not selected my coilovers but I am getting closer.
R compound tires with so lightweight wheels. c5z06 wheels are or zr1 a molds. Dont buy replicas because of the weight issue. if you get a really nice wheel, it can always be used on both cars.
New upgraded bushings everywhere if they are rotten.
Gears?
Just a few to get started. I am building an 88 track car. I am focusing power last, weight and suspension first.
just some starting points.
There is an endless amount of mods for a c4. Choose wisely as you mentioned "prices"... Very easy to sink a c5 into a c4
If you are a power junkie, you do have an ls1/6 to work with in the c5.....
From: Boston, Dallas, Detroit, SoCal, back to Boston MA
The new tapered bearings should hopefully fix that issue.
Try to get a 6sp car.
L98 are great autox cars, lots of low end torque, so either get a miniram for it or get an LT1 or LT4 car. These will also have the large brakes and a stiffer chassis.
Here's a good primer for making a C4 track car, and then you have a series to run in.
There's a few track prepared cars already for sale. You can save a
lot of $$$ by getting one that's already setup.
Like RafteRacer's
96 LT-4. 50,000 mi. 330 RWHP. Very clean autocross/track car.
Still streetable. Hooker headers, custom 3 in. exh. with Moroso spiral
mufflers, Vortex cold air intake, Fidanza flywheel, Spec Stage 3 clutch,
VBP springs and offset lower control arm bushings, Sparco Ultra seat,
5 pt. harnesses, weld-in roll bar.
3 sets of wheels:
- 1 set CCW classics- 17x12 17x11 with 1/2 life V 710 kumhos
- 1 set 17x11 grand sport replicas in black with used V 710s
- 1 set polished GS replicas 17x11-17x9 1/2 with Goodyear GSC street tires in great condition.
totally agree, buy a car already done, prefrebly with a motor done at a real machine shop that is **** about weights and clearances. $12-16k will buy a totally done c4 these days
Buy the newest lowest milage one you can afford. Then take it to the track There's lots you can do, it just depends on where you want to end up. Its always easier to complete a journey if you know your destination.
C4s are much cheaper to buy and mod than C5s, but you'll have to put money into the engine to keep up.
Bud, since you live in Berryville, stop by Summit Point (main) on 23/24 August. NASA is having an event there and I'll be there instructing with my C4. Stop by, introduce yourself and I'll be glad to share with you any information I have about it. I've been tracking my '93 since 2000 and can provide some do's and don'ts that might save you a few bucks. As Slalom4Me pointed out, there are quite a few great deals on track prepared cars and RafteRacer's is one.
BTW, I usually paddock near the fenced "corral" by the restrooms. Look for a red C4 #56. Take care. --Ralph
While it may cost you some money in the engine, remember that there are a TON more parts for the gen1 motor than the LT1 and LS motors. For this reason i would buy a 92 or earlier.

Thanks! I'll try to swing by Sunday afternoon. My son has a tournament Saturday and there is that dang list of stuff to do, but it sounds like a nice diversion!
