One possibility - the Filter/strainer has either come loose or has actually Fallen into the pan (it can't fall very Far..) and is sucking air at the tube connection between the filter and the aluminum housing..

In the summer months, my ciar does it also. I always fill my car to the beginning of the safe zone XXXXXX. This way, in the summer heat, it rises to below the full part of the XXXX.
I would siphon out 1 liter, and see if it improves.
