You have to take out the radiator, the shroud and everything that goes with that.
take off the intake manifold. You have a super ram, right?
take off the rockers and push rods
take out the lifters
Remove the distributor
I removed the oil pan as not to have to put the timing cover back wrong, which you have to remove
You have to remove the AC compressor, the water pump, the alternator, the harmonic balancer, the timing gear.
The AIR system if you still have it....
so...ain't easy...but it ain't hard either, just time consuming
Got your PM.
I should have changed the cam when I did my water pump and harmonic balancer. I changed my radiator at the same time to a Dewitts. I was half way there.

Why does the Superam intake have to come off?
its really hard to get the lifters out with an intake on.

no not trying to be funny.. sorry Fred if t came out like that. This would of been better.. You can not remove the lifers without removing the intake.
of course you can, you simply hold the lifters up each individually with small magnets (the telescopic pickup tool kind) after loosening the rockers, pull the cam, then drop the lifters down and fish them out( chances are a couple with get stuck in the lifter valley when you try to remove the magnets..). Putting em back in would be pretty hard though.. no idea why you would want to do that though.. if you're going to go through all the trouble of installing a new cam you should at least do it right and pull the intake off..

I guess it's safe to assume you didnt remove the lifters?
Right.
The magnets were held in place by the guide plates as shown in the pics and the telescopic length of each magnet was adjusted to hold the lifters up to clear the camshaft. Roller lifters are retained by the spider and will stay in the lifter bore so the magnet can be easily removed. Flat tappets would be trickier to do this way.
Note: I did end up eventually replacing the lifters (about a year later) when I went to the SR/Bigmouth base since I had one lifter that wouldn't pump up properly.
I think this was a pre-existing lifter problem that I had corrected with over adjustment many years ago and had forgotten about, but some sources suggest that lifters can be adversely affected by magnetism.
