Default 96 guys that run Double Roller Timing Chains (Reluctor Ring Question)

Did you discard your Reluctor Ring and program it out, OR did you modify it, as in machining it down or something else to keep it on your motor. I need help to figure out which way to go, thanks in advance.

I initially tried machining it, but after seeing how much material needed to be taken out for the chain to work I decided against keeping it...I wouldn't trust it not to break personally. And all it is a misfire counter anyway.

So what did you do? Just install the Double Roller Sprocket without anything else on the snout? And then use the Non-96 Spacer? And I take it that you just installed the sensor on the timing cover and programmed it out?

You can get a 95 timing cover. It will not have the provision.

The sensor plug isn't the problem, what I'm trying to determine is how can I keep the reluctor ring circuit in my car, or if that's not worth the effort and just pulling the ring using the extra spacer for my balancer hub, and having my tuner code it out.

That's exactly what I did on mine with one exception. I bought a '95 timing cover (no CPS sensor hole). Also, check the clearance on the timing cover using clay or grease. I ended up grinding a bit off the timing cover around the cam gear just to be safe.

The only thing the CPS sensor does is allow the misfire test for OBD2.

Thanks for the input.................If I keep my 96, and the sensor in the hole, there should be no effect with the reluctor ring removed, right? I've already powder coated my 96 timing cover, so to change over to a 95 would be just a hassle if I can accomplish the same thing with what I already have.

Not sure, probably worth a test fit to make sure the sensor doesn't hit the crank gear or chain though.

When I built the 388 for my 96, I used a new Cloyes timing chain set and all the stock pieces went back in without anything being modified.

I didn't have a problem with the reluctor ring either. I had bought a 95 cover from a member on a different forum, thinking I would have a problem, but I ended up selling it and used the stock 96 cover.

Just eliminated the reluctor ring and PCMforLess programed it out as part of my upgraded tune.....

Thanks LT4, I think based upon all of this AND the fact that I've already gone with the E-Pump, then I'll just delete it and run the sensor in the hole with it programmed out. I don't have a 95 cover, and the cover that I already have is modified for the E-Pump and powdercoated.
