Default Electric WP Install/Mechanical Shaft Removal

Hey all, Is it imperative to remove the old mechanical wp drive shaft when installing an electric pump? I just got done buttoning up the timing cover and oil pan when I stumbled on a pump. I sure would like to avoid taking all that stuff off again. Thanks.

I pulled mine, it eliminates a potential failure point and a place to leak oil.

I'd remove it

Do you also need to remove the gear that it is attached to inside the timing cover? Thanks!

Jon,
You should at least press the gear off the shaft if your going to use the shaft to plug the hole. You dont ever want to run an unloaded gear that just freewheels and that is only being supported on one end by a roller bearing. The unloaded gear can chatter and chafe the teeth over time and possibly break the gear and/or this could wear the block end roller bearing excessively without being supported on both ends causing failure also. I think some people are probably running the gear unloaded but I personally wouldn't advise it. Your call.

Yeah, that unsupported shaft is going to wobble around and wear out the seal fairly quick and you'll be back in there anyway.
