(Realized I posted this in the general, not tech, sorry for double post. Don't rough me up too much, hahah)
Hey all,
About two weeks ago, I sold my stingray and bought myself a 1989 c4.
No problems what-so-ever up until today. Took it to the local exhaust shop to get the mufflers deleted (sounds great btw ) and proceeded to pull out of the shop, gun it for about 4 seconds, let off, dropped it into neutral to rev it and listen to see how it sounds. Put it back into drive to realize, i have no more power to the wheels. Tried every gear, from reverse to first with nothing.
It's a 700-R4 auto . Previous owner had it rebuilt 2k miles ago. He also had a b+m shift kit put in
Theres no grinding. Park still works (the rest of the gears double as neutral. At any rpm) Reverse lights still come on when put in reverse. Fluid levels are normal, no visible leaks. Had it towed home, don't know where to even start!
Well unfortunately, 2k miles ago was also over a year ago, so the warranty expired. Talked to the exhaust shop, they said hey hadn't a clue. All i had done was work around the mufflers. Going to jack it up tommarow when its light out again to see if I can see anything obvious.
With an auto, its best to stay out of neutral while moving, but I don't think that roasted your transmission. I accidently went into neutral at 70 before and experienced no ill effects.
Maybe the exhaust shop loosened something down there and that quick burst turned it loose.

That was dumb. C3 is a nicer car. I'd trade mine for an equal value C3.

Could be a lot of things. I'd PM PeteK. Sounds to me like a pump failure, but I'd think you'd here some humming beforehand. I always have.

Hrmm.. Wonder if he didn't secure a snap ring properly... I did this when I did my first 700R4 buildup. Didn't secure the reverse snap ring properly (front of VB) and had no reverse.
Check the 2 bolts that hold the shifter cable to the pan. If they are bolted tight, check the nut at the end of the shifter cable, where it tightens to the linkage on the drivers side of the trans.
If the above checks good, you lost the pump, or the torque converter bolts fell out.
Well, got under there today. Torque conv. is bolted up just fine, and the linkage is connected and unobstructed. Noticed a fresh puddle of fluid, not too big though, coming from somewhere between the t/c and the front of the trans. Also think i might hear a light rattle from the trans when its running, can't tell for sure though.

Disconnect the top metal line at the radiator, clamp a hose it, disable the ignition, and crank the engine. If the fluid does not pump out, then you likely broke the pump stator. If so, it probably took out the pump housing.
If fluid does pump out, the converter is broken.
That is a bad day.
If you wish to fix it yourself, I can try to guide you through it.
Parts are probably inexpensive, but labor to R&R plus 3 hours are probably required.

Sounds like he needs that trans you have for sale
When stuff breaks, it just means you have an excuse to mod things to the way they should have been when they left the factory.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
