Anybody have any pictures of there custome sub and amp enclosure's. I have done my whole custom system 4 times and still and not happy with the sound....Don't get me wrong it sounds and hit hard, but not like it should. This is the HARDEST car I have owned to get it to sound perfect and look good. Mine looks great and really can't tell the car did not come like that if someone was to look in there. But I think there is just no enough air space for my subs to breath right. When the windows are down it pounds..But way different when they are up.
Any pic's and suggestions would be great.
Years and years ago I used to compete with my long gone '84 Vette. I had 12 Boston Acoustics ProSeries speakers in the car with ~750watts of Precision Power amps. I essentially built up the rear area by about 4 inches and put the 10" Pro subs in custom enclosures in the storage compartments. For the "boom" and for it to "hit hard" there's nothing you can really do. Mucho space is needed for a high cubic volume box if you really want BIG sound that'll rattle the rearview mirror off the car. The whole system in my old car was audiophile grade, so the quantity of bass didn't matter a whole lot, but it could blow the windows out if necessary. What it didn't sound like bass-wise was the car before that in which I had dual 15" Rockford Fosgate subs. The bass from that system HURT and hurt bad. No reasonable person would want to sit in the car while it was cranked up. It's all in what you're looking for. For me, I wanted the trophies, I got a whole wall of'em, now I'm retired and spending even more money on speed parts now!
Thanks guys, and I like the picture. I have built 4 enclosures so far and I still am not happy. I myself use to compete many years ago with my IROC... and that car had all Rockford equipment, besides the subs and I had 4 18" JBL standing straight up and all the back seat area was removed. I have been an installer for many years and just can't seem to get this one right. I am now thinking of removing the 2 12" and putting back in the 8" Vertual sub and box that are big $$$$ and smaller in size, but the thing hits like 2 10"... Does anybody have a picture of someone who has done the 12" in the passenger side storage bin? What I have done up til now looks great like I said, but I think I need to just be able to tune it better. I am running 2 12" EL-Basooka, subs. They are the new line of subs that they put out and are awesome... I have removed all stock speakers and put in Fosgate seperates in the doors and running 2-729S Kenwood 600 Watt amps to run the whole thing. I have plenty of power, great mids and highs, but the Bass is not right. Any more thoughts would be great and Pic's.
Thanks again for the help.
I will post pics of mine now, and after the changes for the 5th time.
there used to be a program out on the internet that you could download that let you enter in the subs specs and it would spit out the perfect box size...
I would like to find it again... it had something to do with one of those stereo installation acadamies or something...
I usually use Winisd from Linearteam it has a nice interface and a LARGE database of drivers - also it lets u use closed, vented and isobaric setups.
Best of all IT'S FREE and can be downloaded from http://www.linearteam.org
BTW Hurry up apollo can't wait to see your setup...
Here's what was done with mine:
Those are JL 10's. The arrow points to the port on the "front side" of the enclosure. It fires to the front of the car inbetween the two seats. It does an ok job. No room for anything tho, so that sucked.
I just put in one Punch HE2 10 with 500 watts and it dosent sound as good as i think it should....the lows hit real hard but not the higher bass. I was thinking maybe i need an enclosed box (plexiglass, and a port). Is this possible or does it not make a difference?
It is best to use an enclosed box (no port) The best way is to fire the sub up or to the rear. Look at the specs of the sub and see what it ment for. It makes a HUGE difference. What are you using now or how do have your sub mounted and in what.
89 Paul,
My box is just like yours but my subs fire to the rear and then I have built a solid form fitted enclosure around it that looks like the car came that way. the 2nd enclosure starts right after the storage bins and goes all the way up to the black plastic trim peices that covers the rear latch and stuff. It is all covered in head liner material and looks great. But I had to remove all the cargo area mat and recover everything so it looked factory. My amps are mounted one an each side where the rear speakers use to be and on an angle. You cant see anything when you look back there. I am removing everything again today if it warms up a little bit....COLD....Between doing that and trying to get my shifter cut down and in there the way I wanted it and remounting the OD button on the 4+3 plate...I must have did that 4 times to til I was happy.... But since no one makes the shifter yet for our cars with the 4+3, I decided to do it my self...Now it's very short and tight feeling and the new OD button I put in works great.
Curtis, do you have subs in your car, if so how did you do yours?
I saw a really neat install in a precidia, the same box i'm working on right now. Picture how a volcano is shaped, one fosgate 12 sitting ontop of a pedistal. The bottom of the box is a square wit the top being molded put of fiberglass, hence the volcano shape. The reason I was told to do this is to give the magnet more clearance underneath and also help the overall volume. I think one 12 will sound great, the speakers in there right now are great but i need more base :D
Maybe that helps maybe not
Well,
I did it again and went back to my 1st enclosure, but I dont have access to the storage bins anymore... Oh well, what are you gonna do.... Take the good with the bad. At least I can still put the top in with this enclosure....
Thanks again for the help. I'm sure I will do it again soon.....
I ran two 10 Bazookas off an Xtant amp in an 84. Not what i'd call pretty but if you want "hit hard" windows up / down, top in / out. This setup was tuff to beat.
Nice job guys...looks like we all have the same idea on the installs...We all dont have room for anything......But like good tunes.... I will post pics of mine as soon as I get them back from getting put on a disc... lent my D- cam to a friend.... Where did most of you put your amps? My big thing was not for anything to be seen by would be THIEFS.... as we all know how they are.. My last enclosure was the stuff but could not get to sound right... I should have went with 10's, would have been easier to get right....But went with 12's.... Any of you still using your factory stuff with your subs or did all go with aftermarket... Meaning still using factory locations but different speakers? I changed all my factorys out and went aftermarket, but was not happy with that either. So I put seperates in the doors. I did not have door speakers to begin with, but was easy to get in there and the hole is already in the door itself bihind the panel... So if I ever want to put back, it will be an easy fix by just making a new lower panel... Like I said I will more than likely change mine again... My girl just rolls her eyes at me everytime I rip it out again.... Now I am thinking of doing an Isobarik sub system.....But hard to get just right and in a vette no less......We will see....
