Default MAT Sensor relocating

Quick question guys.

I'm wanting to relocate the Intake Temperature sensor on my L98 (89 coupe).

Mid America Motorworks and Ecklers both sell a kit to do this, BUT they are different enough to make me ask questions.

mam relocates the sensor by drilling a hole in the air intake housing just infront of the MAF and plugs in the new sensor there.

Ecklers flat mounts it's sensor in the open somewhere in the front of the engine compartment.

Which is better?

Also it appears that both kits reuse the existing factory cable by plugging an accompanying extension cable that comes with the kit into it, then to the sensor.

HOWEVER, mam requires specifying which type cable connector you need (rectangle or mushroom) whereas Ecklers does not (one cable fit's all?) Seems to me this could be important.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Why do you want to do that? Just curious. I moved mine when I ported the intake, I didn't like how the MAT stuck up in front of the back runner.

You do not need a kit, just cut the wire and spice in your own. I drilled a hole in the air filter box for mine.

Thats exactly where mine is located on my '85. Still not sure what the actual purpose of relocating it is. I know what they advertise, but I can't see where a gain could be had.

I think the best it does is make you less likely to break it if you remove the plenum often.

That's how the mam kit shows it!

Why? I guess mainly because it's a cheap upgrade, and also I can see where the sensor would read much cooler temperatures from within the air filter housing. Where it's at now (under the air plenum) has got to be reading way hot!!! I've been parked now for about 2 hours, and the plenum is still too hot to lay your hand on comfortably.

Besides, they promised an extra 100 horses with the relocation!

Gotcha. IMO it is worth doing if you don't buy the kit and are going to work on the car often.

I found that after by-passing the coolant hose running into the throttle body my plenum is much cooler. The next time I have my plenum off car I will re-locate the MAT but I won't be using a kit to do it.

It fools the ECM into thinking there is colder air going in so it richens the engine up.One of those unresolved debates

Moving the MAT to a cooler place richens the mixture, getting you no HP gain, but could shorten the life of your engine. Don't waste your time, or money.

The plugs on mine are showing a little lean. Still checking into that. I noticed no difference with the coolany bypass but it sure is simple to pull the TB.

When you run a MAF you won't see any performance change by moving the MAT; with '90 & '91 SD intake it could bring a change.

I bought a kit (don't recall which) that just plugged into the OEM cable and ran the wires inside a black spiral-wram along the firewall along the LH fender well and into the LH side of the air intake box. Made for a very stealth install.
