Hi,
I'm new to the forums but have been reading them for about a year. I'm ready to have my heads ported and install a LT4 Hot Cam, My brother who is a GM Master Mechanic is trying to convence me that it would be easier and quicker to just pull the motor and make the changes. What to you think?.....and if so then i'll wait til I have saved some more $$$$ and just have the block bored .50 over and do it all at once.
Also, Can anyone post their STOCK RWHP numbers for a 95 LT1 6spd. I've looked and I really can't find anything that seems to be an average. I'm thinking somewhere in the 270 range and with the mods I've made so far hoping to be closer to 300.....going to go for a pull in a few weeks.
Re: Pull the motor for Heads and CAM? (FrankUrbinati)
In a Vette , yes pull it out. Less frustration and youll protect your hood and new cam. Plus you can see that everything else is all good. Best of luck.It souns pretty sweet.
Re: Pull the motor for Heads and CAM? (blk90rdstr)
I did it without pulling the motor. It sucked! My back, neck, and knees throbbed for days. I had to lift the motor up a few inches in order to get the cam out. It really wasn't that bad though. I have all the equiptment and knowledge as well to pull the whole motor but it seemed like a lot of extra work. For me the hardest part of the whole job was getting the timing cover back on, other than that it was just time consuming. Take your time and triple check everything and you guys will be fine.
Can it be done yes I have changed a head gasket on the side of the road, Is it good for the back NO! IF you have other things you want to do Id wait and pull the whole thing....
Leave the motor in the car. Just put the car up on jackstands, it really helps the back. I did the heads and cam job and it wasn't that bad. Sure I had to raise the motor up a couple of inches but that's easily done with a floor jack. I only lifted it for a few minutes to get the old cam out and the new one in.
WHile its not necessary to pull the whole motor out,its far easier to work on the engine when its out of the car on a engine stand.
Once you have the engine torn down to just the bare block, youll see its not much more work, and in fact probably easier to have pulled it out first.
To myself and Im sure the master techs esp,
pulling the engine out is much better then doing the back breaking work while its still in the car.
EVERYTHING on the engine is accessible with minimal fuss when its out the car.
:)

Thanks, for all the input, I think I'll just wait until this march after I've saved enough to go ahead and and bore the block and have that 396 stroker and then be done with all....ya right.... well at least for a year or 2.
