Since the search doesn't work I was not able to find any relevant posts. Let me try to explain whats going on with my 85 auto. When I am in OD at around 55 and let off the throttle the car has engine braking like it should (or like other cars have in my experience). Once I get below 40 it 'freewheels' with no engine braking. Downshifting has no effect.
It does downshift though, but just has no engine braking. For instance, if I am running 30 in 3rd and let off, it freewheels. By freewheeling I mean that the car is coasting in gear yet the motor returns to idle rpm's. While freewheeling and shift to 2nd there is no change. Now, if I increase the throttle while now in 2nd, the rpm's are higher once power is starting to be applied as it should since I am now in second. Ditto if shifting to first.
I have no experience with stall converters but was thinking that perhaps this may be the reason? I don't know how they work or if there is a non-stock TC on this car. When taking off from a stop there is no hesitation, it just smoothly takes off and it up shifts ok other than maybe going into OD a bit soon.
Is this normal behavior or is there something amiss? Thoughts? Thanks!
