Ok this this is making me nuts!!!!. Here are my latest symptoms.
First off, I just had the Opti replaced with a new one, also the ignition control module has been replaced. The car will start and run fine, sometimes it will die right away, sometimes it will run for 20 minutes and die, length of time seems to vary, but it will always start right back up. Here's where it gets confusing, no matter how long it runs, i does not always leave a code after it dies, sometimes it will ( code 36 when it does) and sometimes it won't drop a code. Either way the car will restart and run, if it sets a code the SES light will be on when i restart the car it runs either with the SES light on or not. I have checked grounds, the wiring harness from the opti to the test connection under the fuel rail and all is good there. The only thing i have not changed is the coil?? I appricate the advice!!

I had a code 35 on an '89 that the dealer and previous / original owner couldn't fix. At someone's suggestion I replaced all of the relays (needed an FSM to find them all) and no more code 35.
Don't know what year? Mines an 87, and the FSM says code 36 is a MAF burn off circuit. You should follow the trouble shooting guide to eliminate the 36, relays are fairly cheap, and can cause an intermittent, bad connections can do the same. I'd also check the coolant temp sensor. Both of these can cause a fuel delivery problem.

1992..Code36 is faulty high res code for the Optispark!
New or not optis are bad out of the box. Unless you Oscope the signal and record it to see what happens( then it may show a bad opti anyway) replacing the opti is about all you can do. Personally I don't get the opti denial I have seen around here lately" I got a code 36 or 16 what else can it be?" except in the very rare case of wiring issue or ecm nothing else.
I had a code 36 and it called for replacement of the MAF burn circuit sensor...its and '89...be carefull...there are two...two trips to the parts store and I am fine...I used Standard Ing.Parts..
