You have to carefully remover the plastic 6 speed pattern indicator piece out of the top of the handle. Then there will be a small square key you pull out underneith that. Kind of like a woodruff key. Then the shift handle will unthread off the shifter.
I converted my '87 to a ZF 6 speed, but it should be the same:
Gently pry off the plastic gear pattern cap / diagram. You'll see a silver "T" lock inserted into the handle. I like to gently grab that "T" lock with a pair of small vise grips and tap the vise grips upward with a hammer. The "T" lock should pop out and then you can unscrew the shift ****.

I thought the same thing but no, it's not once you see it for yourself.
Nice that no matter how many times you remove the shift **** it will always remain in the correct position, no way the threads will wear thanks to the indexing "T" key.
Some 800-lb gorilla installed that little "T" key on my shifter - it was in pieces by the time I got it out. When I reinstalled the ****, I just left it out.
