Alright guys I need some advice. Currently I have a 88 vette with a 6 speed swap and a dana 36 running 3.73 gears. The car is mainly used for 1 mile shootouts. This year the car managed a 163mph mile which was better than expected. Unfortunately I am already out of gear so I need to swap the gears in the rear end. I want to stay with the dana 36 for now to save money instead of going to a dana 44. After looking online it is slim pickings for gear selection on a dana 36 it appears I am limited to either 3.54 or 2.73. If there are more gear sets available please direct me to where they are sold because I have not found them yet. The 3.54's will get me another 10-12 mph which will take a good amount of HP to get there and probalby keep me happy for a couple more years. The 2.73 would easily give me a lot more room for speed however I am wondering if they are too tall of a gear.
The 3.73 and 3.54 are aftermarkets gear sets. Dana never made the 36 with those ratios. Long discontinued, there was a 3.31, Then the more popular 3.07, 2.73, and finally the 2.59:1.
The Dana 44 was factory supplied, for Corvettes, with 3.54, 3.45, 3.33. and 3.07:1 gear sets. Nothing faster.
To have the 3.73 gear, you must have already been in there once.
I think the 3.54s would be ok, other than that, the 3.07 would be your best bet.
If I were you though...I would go ahead and save the money for a dana 44 and do it right the first time. If not, you might put those gears in there and promptly break them.
dana 36 does not like power and traction! Ask me how I know!

While that is true, it isn't so much of a problem with "The car is mainly used for 1 mile shootouts.". I probably have 800+ 1/4 mile passes on my never touched Dana 36, with good traction. Granted, I've never applied much HP to it.
Good point, wonder what kind of power he's throwin' down?
Wish my d36 would have lasted until I made my first trip to the track! I never even got to launch....except that one time before the et streets....went sideways for ever.
Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I just need to find a used 3.07 gear set. To answer your question my car is currently putting down 370 at the wheels and soon to be 400 with a little extra tuning. The car is never launched so that should help the dana 36 hold up for a while but like everything else it will break eventually.

It sounds like you will be just fine with your Dana 36. I've got a Dana 36 with over 700 passes down the 1/4 mile. The only thing I had to do is replace the clutches.
