when optispark goes bad can it work ok once in a while?
Hi I got a 93 corvette with 56000 miles. Last saturday it would turn over just fine but wouldn't start. Monday it started just like nothing was wrong. I brought it to a mechanic and had him check for trouble codes and test drive it. He couldn't find anything wrong. I know a lot of problems don't show in the trouble codes and maybe a optispark is one of those. Is there a way to test a optispark? It's got me worried as one of the best car cruises is this weekend. I really want to go but don't want it to break down in a traffic jam. Thanks Tim
Mine would start fine and run great for awhile, and would mostly only act up on hot days or if the temp of engine got up around 210.
turned out all the bearings in the until went bad due to water pump leaking!!
Well that's great! Going to a car cruise last year it really overheated there. I've felt around the water pump, didn't feel anything wet. I don't have any of the things other people say happen with a bad optispark. When it wouldn't start it was first time starting it for about a week, wasn't hot.I have a cooling system pressure tester. I think I'll test the water pump If it doesn't leak I won't worry about it. I got towing anyway Thanks Tim
I imagine that you have an unvented one which was common on
GM cars and gave the Camaros a hard time. I had a 96' and was failrly lucky. Even at that, I rebuilt mine when I replaced the water pump and it looked crummy inside. I can see why it would give problems especially in wet weather where you would have high voltage arching around inside and to ground. You may want to look at an upgrade, several models were available for the Camaros and I'm sure you can improve on the Vette one too.
