I have a 93 vette that had the FX3 shock system on it when I bought the car (sadly, the car was not well maintained). The problem is that they are all shot and I can not afford the $800-1200 to replace them. I drive the car daily and would like to replace the FX3 system with a good set of regular shocks. Do I need a kit or are there shocks that will fit.
Several months ago there was an article in the Wear and Tear section of Corvette Fever that addressed the conversion of FX3 to regular shocks. The process was not that involved and required disconnecting a small module, I think behind the driver's seat. If you are interested, I will locate the article and fax it to you. Just Email me with your fax number and mention the article in your note.
They can rebuild you shocks either to the OEM specs or they can be custom-valved for your own driving style or needs. I thing the cost is around $75 or so per shock. The FX3 system is a very good system; it IS expensive to replace the actuators but IMHO the money is well worth it.
You can disconnect the shock controller behind the driver's seat and under the lid. Remove the Bilstein shocks and the actuators and replace with something else. Some folks use KYB Gas-A-Just as a good shock replacement. Just ask for shocks for your car as though it did not have the FX3.
By all means keep the Bilstein shocks and maybe you can save some bucks to get them rebuilt later on.
i also had a fx3 car & sold the shot shocks and actuators for 300 to buy a set of new z51 bilsteins. car is MUCH better now but i almost wish i would have just spent the cash & had mine rebuilt, oh well since i just left it in performance all the time i'm not sure if i'd even notice a difference. if you really want a tight shock try the konis.
