I have an 88 which was running great up until 2 weeks ago. Now it starts good and idles decent. Good pick up with no misses. As soon as you are going with no load and the rpms are above 1600 the car starts to miss. If you back right off the gas it will backfire. I have changed the wires and plugs. I also checked the main cat as I thought it may be plugged and causing too much back pressure.
I have not had any work done to it. The problem came on very sudden. It had not caused any engine codes. The backfires seem to be intake. I have not yet replaced the dist cap yet but will be doing so tommorrow. My big fear is a head gasket but the fact that it does not happen under load kind of suggests not.
