Are the 1/2 shafts or spindles or bearings or anything out at the wheel different on a Dana 44 compared to a Dana 36? I know to do the swap you need a D44 diff, batwing, C-beam and driveshaft at minimum. Is there any benefit to swapping the entire rear, spring, 1/2 shafts, spindles and all or are all those parts the same? It seems the spindles and 1/2 shafts are a weak spot on the D-36 but then I've been told the spindles and 1/2 shafts on a D-44 are the same. Is that true? Are they the same?
Hey vettef6, I notice you have done the D44 swap and zf6 swap. I wonder why people like me and you just didn't buy a manual car in the first place?
cwyates4,
At the time when I was looking for a '92 model I found this one. Wasn't my color and trani, but it was a real bargain!! After all these years (14 altogether) I changed so many things, color, trani, engine, coil overs, wheels, brakes etc....
See sig. and my pictures on http://arnold200.fotopic.net/
So, what part of the D-36 is weak and gives reason to swap to a D-44 setup? Is it just the case itself that breaks? Or the gears? I always thought it was the spindles and 1/2 shafts but if those parts are the same then obviously I thought wrong.
I have a '92 and everything fit in perfectly and seems to be the same. Didn't have to buy anything to make it work.
What all parts did you have to swap to make the change? I'm assuming just the centersection, batwing, driveshaft and C-beam? In searching it seems that is all that needs to be purchased to make the swap.

I didn't swap the C-beam, I drilled new holes on the trani side of the C-beam to make it fit. Other people have done this also.
COOL! So then all I'd need is the centersection, batwing, and driveshaft from a 6 speed car, right? Will that driveshaft bolt right up to my universal at the back of the trans or do I need the slipyoke from the 6 speed car also? (I think that's what it's called, the piece that has female splines that slip into the trans and has the U-joint on the other end.)
You don't necessarily need a 6 speed driveshaft, the one from a 4-3 will work, even the slip yoke is the same. If you do get a driveshaft from a ZF6 car you will need to swap the slip yoke from the automatic to the manual shaft since the ZF6 output shaft is larger.
You need the yoke from your car, not the six speed car. Just swap your yoke to your d44 driveshaft. I swapped the cbeam, centersection, halfshafts, batwing, and rear spring. But all you need is the cbeam, driveshaft, centersection and batwing to make it work.
