Driving home tonight for about 25 min.'s, everything fine, stopped at Shell and got 93, went a few miles and stopped at a light. After a few seconds car started sputtering, wanting to die, check engine light came on, and loud metal ticking sound (like a fan hitting something) from motor area. I got it in the driveway and shut it off, felt like it hardly had any power. Started it twice more and had to give it gas to keep it running, same ticking sound. Didn't want to run it long or move it.
Does this sound like a serious motor problem, or bad gas or what?
Again it was fine until a few miles after getting gas.
Have not checked for codes yet.
Would bad gas cause such a loud clicking sound?
Should I add octane booster? Think it is OK to run?
Check your codes first, then that'll hopefully give you an idea of where the source of the problem is. HOPEFULLY!......... Bad gas can make these cars act crazy, and even knock unexpectedly, so please don't rule that out. But before you start down the path of an engine problem, just see what she's (Your Baby) is telling you and then go from there. I hope it's not a serious problem but I'll wait to see how this turns out! Goodluck Bro!

I know you are hoping for "just got some bad gas" solution. But that loud clicking sound is worrisome. Have you checked your oil level ?
As stated, check for error codes(short pin4 and pin12 on ALDL, ignition on(but don't start engine), record errors from digital display. Also, try to locate the vacinity of where this "loud clicking" is coming from.
I would definately not drive the car until you have more information. If you drive it, and it turns out to be something more than just bad gas, you could do a lot more damage to your engine.
What part of the engine is it coming from? I recently had a bad ticking noise and turned out to be a broken spring retainer...hopefully yours turns out better than mine was!
Im thinking fuel pump or fuel filter. Did you run way low on gas and possibly clog the fuel filter. Also look closely to see on the bottom side of all your plug wires arent fouling out on a hot header pipe.

Pull the historical codes using the paperclip.
Post codes found.
If fuel filter is original replace it.
Have the ICM and coil checked as well.
One time my 92 just flat died, thought it was the opti. Someone suggested replacing the coil and that did the trick until the water pump went.
OK, removed valve cover and I have a broken spring and retainer....great.
These are CC 918 behives on LE2 heads, less than 16K miles and 2 years old! I know the originals had issues, but I thought these would be OK.
I will take the car to my mechanic ASAP and have him go through for damage. What is the likelyhood that I have piston damage? ZIX I know you had the same issue, what else was damaged?
So here is the big question, should I do a stroker if there is piston damage, or even if there is not? It has about 116K on the motor now, I don't want to have to do this again in 20-30k miles.

First thing you need to do, obviously is determine is there is more damage. Did the valve drop? If the valve is still up then you need to hook that cylinder up to some compressed air and preform a leak down to ensure the valve is not bent. Compare the results with the other 3 cylinders on that side of the engine. Was it an intake or exhaust valve?
If the valve dropped you could have piston and head damage and a complete tear-down is pretty much necessary. However, from what you said I don't think that the valve dropped...you would have had a much more noticeable problem.
When my retainer broke the valve did not drop, it was held in place by the inner spring (I am running dual springs).
Are you running steel or Ti retainers? Good luck! Let me know if I can be of any help!
I need to go and luck more closely at the valves.
They were CC steel retainers.
I spoke to LLoyd and he said the same thing you did. He recommended the Patriot Gold Extreme dual springs, what do you think?
I don't know anything about those springs, but Lloyd knows the cam you have and the spring pressure necessary to control the valves. I would take his recommendation, or call Comp, Isky, etc and see what they have as a similar spring. I run Isky springs personally.
If everything in the motor is okay you'll need springs, retainers, and valve locks. Also, you may need to replace the valve seal where the spring broke, and also look very closely at the rocker. Mine got pretty banged up so i replaced it as well.
Do you have the high $ Isky Tool Room springs?
RR looks OK.
Valve is down in the hole, can see just the top of stem in the guide.
It is the passenger side head, and the left valve of the pair, don't know if that is intake or not.

If the valve is down in the hole you might have some problems. Not only is it more likely there is more internal damage, but if you can't get a grip on the valve to pull it abck up you'll need to pull the head off to get to it. I was lucky because of the dual springs, the inner spring actually held the valve up from falling into the cylinder. The springs that I am running are part Isky #8005-A. Not very expensive actually.
Did you break a spring AND retainer, or just one or the other?
