Default Info overload: datalogging

Having trouble getting this to work.

1989 c4 6 speed, assuming 1227165 ecm.

I made an ALDL to com1 cable according to http://w1.601.telia.com/%7Eu60113744...dl/winaldl.htm
specifically, the second diagram, with no r3 or r4. Tried using the WinALDL software and was getting some raw data only. Nothing I recognized, no other data and the box to the left of the "config" button displayed a flashing red 5.

I did not jump terminal a+b with any reisistor as I wasn't sure I wanted the "test" modes that change ecm settings.

I downloaded "freescan" and moates ecm852, but both programs suggest the 10k resistor for terminals a+b. Specifically for 8192 baud rate. the WinALDL is for 160 baud so it would make sense in my head why the R shouldn't be required??

Am I over analyzing this? If I have the 10k R jumping the A+B terminals will the ecm disable spark knock and mess with the idle? Thats one of the main things I want to datalog, I have some OTC scanners which are nice, I just want all the data in front of me on a laptop and be able to review later.

thanks,
Mike

well I put the 10k R in and winALDL seems to work, the other programs don't seem to work but I'm running xp now so maybe thats something.

Now I just have to figure all this stuff out.

the 10k R won't change anything if I were to just drive around datalogging would it?

That's how I do it.

The Moates ECM852 scan program will not work under Windows XP. To allow it to work on your computer you must use a Windows 98 boot disk when you stat\rt the computer.

After the computer is booted you will see on the screen "A:\" after which you should type "ecm852.exe" and hit Enter. (I put this in the reply in case you weren't familiar with the old DOS procedures)

For a copy of the boot go to:

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Downr...d_Boot_CDs.htm

Most people have problems running the program with any OS newer than Win98.

thanks,

You should only have to flash the terminals, with the 10k R, to get the data flowing. Put a switch in line with the 10k R, switch it on till the data starts, and then switch it out.
I wouldn't run very far in the diag mode (switch ON).

I use datamaster, and the above method works fine.
I also have a few AutoXray hand scanners, and if you tap into the connectors and watch, all they do is flash the 10K also.

This is wonderful information! Thanks!

I took it around the block in diagnostic mode and it showed ALLOT of spark knock.

As to the evil's of newer computers, I'm working on re-formatting a bare bones thinkpad 600 on '98. I was just seeing if I made the cable correctly with my regular laptop.

Thats good to know, I always assumed the 10k needed to be present for data to flow.

As far as winALDL the program works, as soon as I remove the R from pin a+b, the data flow stops. I'm doing some searching now to avoid posting Q's already answered, but the exhaust with the R in ALDL mode makes my eyes water. No success with freescan or ecm852 yet.

Also, I was looking to make a cable from extra otc ALDL connectors, the Ground "A" tab does not have continuity with the otc connector, would using a body ground be ok? Trying to make a professional cable.

Also, do I need to figure out how to adjust the baud rates to use freescan or ecm852 to use the cable designed by Mr. Bylund?

Download Datamaster here .... the DM35x32 version.

http://www.ttspowersystems.com/DataM...downloads.html

Pretty sure you can scan with no restrictions and save 20 log files before you have to buy it.

Better program than the others, and more up to date.

And I know that 10K flash works, first hand on my 88

Oh boy, winaldl is for 160 baud as well as the 1 transistor cable, which is for older ecm's. Will need to build a new cable for the MAF ecu.

There are just too many different ways to do this.

I built a 2 transistor cable sourcing voltage from the COM1 port, just stuck a VOM on it and its only giving me 9.5 v, not quite enough to run the circuit. Going to try to get 12v externally and see if I can see something on 8192.

Apparently pin E is for 160, pin M is for 8192.

If I get this thing to work I'm going to throw up a bunch of links to hopefully help bring everything together.
