Default Automatic Transmission issues need some help!

Hello

I was driving my 92 A4 out on the highway the other day, De accelerating comming into town. The transmission made a very interesting noise which could be described as a metallic whirring sound. The sound quickly went away, the car drove ok the rest of the way to my destination.

Today I get in it, and notice that when driving at higher speeds, when you let off the gas while you are not in over drive, the RPM of the engine drops all the way back down to idle instead of staying relative to vechile speed.

The transmission does not slip, did not smell hot, drove home 85 miles without issue (in OD).

The car is a 92 A4, 133k miles, runs great, its been driven like a corvette should... spirited.

Does anybody know what let loose in the transmission , or what couples the engine speed relative to vechile speed.

Thanks!

Put the trans in 3rd gear and see if the problem goes away. If so, broken sprag.

The problem is only when its in drive , not overdrive.

In overdrive the RPMs stay where they should while coasting at highway speeds.

The overrun apply piston likely broke.

Would you happen to know if this is something that the entire transmission needs to be dropped for to be fixed?

Rebuild time?

The overuns are in the forward (input) drum, and you must pull the pump to get to it. Considering the miles, and the labor, it makes sense to overhaul it. If you can drop the trans and repair it yourself, it is only about $50 in parts to repair.

Thanks alot for the info.

I figured whatever broke will require the tranny to be dropped.

I have never worked inside of a AT before, I have no issues with dropping it. I have wrenched on every other aspect of this car, might as well add the transmission to the list.

With the miles on the car I was already aiming at a rebuild / replacement. I see you can buy a pretty decent replacement unit for 1500-2000 , built however you like.

Once again , thanks , I appreciate it.
