I have run in to a issue with the 383 in my 84 that I can figure out. I have about 5k on the motor. When I start the motor after it has sat for a few days the valve train will clack away for a second or two. The block is a full roller and I have CompCams roller rockers, lifters and pushrods. I have adjusted the valves many times and I have already replaced the lifters once. The oil pressure is fine and I use a Melling high volume pump. I am at a loss. Are there any suggestions as to what I should further investigate?
Sometimes, the brand of oil filter can make all the difference. Frams are known for their start up rattle, mine quieted down quite a bit when I went to AC DELCO.
I realize you are in AZ, but you 're not using a straight 30 oil are you?
FWIW I'd use 10-30 in your application
Steve
I have been doing more readying about oil filters... I hope it is this simple. I need to change the oil anyway... I have read Wix are good filters as well.
oil pressure bleed down while sitting, when ya fire it up it takes a few minutes to repressurized the lifters and in that time there is some slack like a solid lifter would have.
good points with the oil filters, if this doesn't cure it I would verifyl that your not wearing down a cam lobe prematurely and if all looks well, then it is what it is or you can perhaps get an oil accumulator for prelubing the egnine before starting.
