I've been trying to keep up on all the discussion about engine operating temperatures and now have some questions. Seems like the primary cooling fan on my 94 comes on at 218 degrees and the second fan comes on at 228. What controls the temperature at which the fan comes on? Can this be changed/adjusted? I'd sure like to have the fan come on around 200 instead of 218.
A fan switch. You can change the point at which the fans come on with a Hypertech, fan switch which fits into the block, or a manual switch(cheapest). :yesnod:
The auxillary manual cooling switch can be added no problem. If you want it to occur automatically, you're going to need a custom prom. In my '93, the fans are set to turn on at 180 degrees. For the car to run this cool, you'll also need to add a cooler thermostat. For me? I put in a 160 degree tstat and during this time of year the oil and coolant never goes over 180. Unless, of course, we're talking about going out and making back to back acceleration tests... or running a road course.
Manual fan switch is the easiest. I believe Mid America and/or Eckler's has kits if you want to go that way. I have the manual switch on mine and I like it because I control it. For the smog check in California, I prefer to leave the switch in the automatic mode so the fans behave like they are supposed to.
Change the programming. The '94 works on an EPROM and is easy to change if you know someone with the software and cable. Lots of us running around. Check the ECM tuning section of the Forum for someone near you.
