Default No Heat? Check this before you pull your core

I replaced my core because of poor heat, and it did improve, but not like I hoped. I had no heat at idle, so I thought something else was blocked. I found the fitting going into the intake manifold that has the small hose going to the throttle body, completely blocked, with rust and stuff. I cleaned it out with CLR used for cleaning bathrooms, etc and I now have some serious heat at idle.
It fooled me because my heater hoses and the pipe leading to the core would get hot pretty quick.
Hope this helps some one

Thanks for the tip.

I just put a 180 deg stat in my IROC to get more heat (though the Vette runs me out with a 160 deg stat) and it only helped a little. Since the heater is only copla years old, guess I need to check for flow restrictions.

is that the pipe with the insulator around it? If so mine ets really hot too and is also pretty stuffed up-- heat isnt bad but isnt real good. Howd you blow out the CLR?

Jsailor,
I took the fitting off of the intake and found the problem. I beleive it was a 7/8's socket. Mine did not have any insulation around it. On my 85, in the front, and to the left is a hose that runs from the intake to the throttle body. Looks like a 5/8's molded heater hose. I have been fighting rust in the cooling system for years and decided to pull anything and everything I could to clean it. That is when I found the plugged fitting. Does that help?
FYO did a bit J24 sailing myself, great boats
