ok pulled the timing cover off of the 85. distributar is pointing towards the number one piston and the cam timing gear dot is at 12oclock position and the crank gear is also at the 12oclock position. does this sound correct. my corvette man also shows this but for some reason i think they should cam gear 6oclock and crank gear at 12oclock which is corect.

The 12 and 12 oclock with rotor toward #1 cap terminal is correct.
You have to get it on there right after you heat it up. If it starts to cool while you're still in the process, then you'll either have to take it back off and try again, or beat it the rest of the way on.
If you have access to compressed Nitrous or Nitrogen, then a buddy could blast the crank snout with it right as you gear out of the oven.
