I have a friend who just bought his kid a 94 black rose coupe. Great looking car real clean but has a lot of hwy miles over 100k. The fuel/mileage readout beside the mph reads correctly but every few seconds it will flash SYS about four times then goes backy to correct reading. It does this on all readouts of this function. The only thing is when you turn the radio on it works correctly. All indications show proper readings other than the flashing SYS. If you have any ideas help is greatly appreciated.
Hook a code scanner to it and see what codes are stored. Disconnect battery for 15 seconds to erase memory in ECM and then restart car to see if code resets.
Possible problems - [1] Bad Battery, [2] Bad Alternator not charging, [3] Loose battery connections. I'd start and make sure all the connections are clean and tight as well as getting the battery and charging checked. MOst times the "SYS" indicates a failing or bad battery.
True, 99% "SYS" r battery/charging related, but one thing that caught my attention was the Radio statement......if it is an Aftermarket radio.....u might not have the resistor that is needed for aftermarket radios...so that it will not throw a code.
Btw: if your friends 94 has a 16 pin connector to pull codes and does not have a scanner or no $ to buy one, short pins 4 and 12 they will line up 4 on top and 12 on the bottom, turn on the key but not the car and look at the speedo area and codes will start appearing u will be in the "Auto Mode" for one cycle then it will be in the "Manual Mode", which gives u the same info as a scanner.

I stopped by and talked with him today. Passed on the info. And the car has the factory radio. He also said his other son was listening to radio the other day and battery went dead so it sounds if you guy are right on about the electrical.
