Default headlight switch...maybe??

I was driving the other night when the headlight warning buzzer started to go off for no reason. I am wondering if this is an ignition switch problem or something. It's making the same noise as when you get out of the car and forget to turn the headlights off...but this happened while I was driving the car and now it comes on anytime I turn the headlights on. I am also trying to take the headlight switch out to fix the broken dash reinforcement at the upper left side where it bolts to the pillar. I see the spring button on the side, but I cant get the rod to disengage from the switch. Does the switch need to be in off, park, or on when I press the little spring button in to disengage the rod. Thanks.

Leave the rod in the switch. Instead remove just the ****. This is done by depressing the little spring clip that is visible through a slot in the ****. Depress the clip away from the dash with a small screwdriver and pull off the ****. Then you can remove the dash panel. Be careful when doing this as the **** is easy to break and fairly expensive for such a small part.

Thanks Dave. I have had the **** off for some time now. I need to rivit an alluminum piece to the plastic dash support and it needs to be where the light switch is because the plastic part that mounts to the stud above it is broken and makes the dash sag on the driver's side. I have an early 86....I suppose it's the same as an 85. There is a bolt/screw that holds the switch in there, but the rod goes through the center of it and looks like it uses a flatheaded screw driver to remove it, but the rod has to be removed first.

Leave the rod where it is remove the retaining nut with a flat bladed spanner wrench...a spanner wrench is a tool that looks like a "U".

I've used a screwdriver to remove this nut with my '86. Just start it by putting a small screwdriver in one side of the slot and tap the handle in a counter clockwise direction until it starts to turn. Then I've used 2 small screwdrivers to turn out the nut. It's usually pretty easy and doesn't damage the nut if your careful. By the way, I used J&B Weld to bond a reinforcement in this area, I didn't have to rivet. Good Luck!
