Default How in the world did this happen?

My oil pressure has been slowly getting lower and lower to where it idles around 12 psi hot (950rpm idle). Went to the track last weekend and ran the crap out of it blowing an alternator in the process. Crazy thing is, when I put the new alt on and fired it up, I have 60psi immediately where I normally had 50psi. Hot, its sitting around 26psi now. What could have happened to raise the pressure???

Hook up a mechanical gauge to check the real oil pressure, the varying voltages from a failing alternator could have been screwing with the dash.

Thanks!! didn't do too well but neither did anyone else. It was about
95* and super high humidity. A viper showed up and ran a best of 12.7 before I left. I only made one run before I blew the alt. 12.5/117 with a .997 light, 2.1 60' and missing 3rd gear Then I put it on the trailer. I was mad, sweaty, and thirsty!

If the alternator blew it may have been on the way out and its output could have been lower than normal.....the lower than normal voltages could be the culprit for inaccurate reading you were getting/seeing from the gage cluster.

Nice car!

Gotcha. So what's the plan with the motor for the winter? Love to see that sucker make over 500 to the tire.

Have you thought about changing heads?

Also could you post your dyno sheet if that's possible?

Talk to you later.

Default guessing

sick old alt might have had you running on the battery 12.2 v, maybe less...new alt may be "high limit" normal of 16v...elec gauges are all a crude circuit using a rheostat (variable potentiometer) and a volt-meter that indicates residual voltage but is re-labeled to press, temp, etc--diff system voltage would alter readout ...or maybe you spun a rod/main bearing and are seeing the higher oil pressure than sometimes occurs for a short time before "the big one'
