My exhaust sounds great and didnt cost a fortune, its very loud though. Would have been a lot cheaper if i'd used different mufflers. You could use a new pair of stock ones (like $150).
$230 used long tube headers
$210 straight pipes
$450 Magnaflow SS mufflers
I understand your predicament, and my recommendation would be to simply go with a set of muffler eliminators that you see advertised in the magazines. Unless you make all sorts of changes such as getting rid of catalytic converters (illegal), installing headers etc., none of these expensive systems seems to make a difference that is enough to justify the cost. Lots of people (like me) seem to be going through multiple aftermarket systems. Muffler eliminators are simple, inexpensive and will give you a louder and more aggressive tone. I am going back to them, myself, from a TPIS system that I don't like much.
Headman long tube headers = $200 used (like new) from forum
Summit 3" H pipe = $40
(2) Dynomax 3" race mufflers = $80 total
3" exhaust installed at local muffler shop = $260
It is a little loud durring normal driving. I compare it to a Mid Year with sidepipes. When on the throttle it is LOUD and sounds like a race car.
I have no resonance (spelling) driving down the road.
what is the inexpensive modification to stock mufflers??
The stock mufflers up until the early 90's only had one outlet open. If you open the second outlet, it will wake up the sound dramatically without undue resonance.
The straight outlets are easy to do with an arc welder by just reaching inside with a new "long" rod and "burning" a large hole in the casing. The '84's used the down turned tips, so you might have to remove the tip first to cut the hole, then have the tip welded back on.
A local shop here showed me this and I promise, you won't be disappointed with the sound.
My exhaust has only 8k on it and I couldn't see replacing it without giving this a try.
What is a good sounding exaust without spending $1,500??
Find someone with an LTx car that has swapped an aftermarket system on. I'll have one off of one of my cars in the near future (without the rear mufflers) if you're interested. 2-3/4" true duals.
