Default ZF to TKO600 install thread?

Is there any interest in pics etc for a ZF to Keisler TKO600 swap?

Tremec tranny arrives next week, install probably on October 11th .

Keisler has been in several mags so maybe everyone has already seen this.

LD85, you always do a superb job of documenting your projects.

It takes more time to get the photos and build the content, but if
you are inclined to create a write-up, this would certainly be of
interest to me.

As an A4 owner, the swap is not something I am bound to be
duplicating myself. However, I find I always learn something new
from watching how others go about their projects.

It works for me, I will do some measuring and picture taking, but probably wont post anything on this until Saturday October 11th or Sunday the 12th,, as long as the tranny arrives next week, I will be on it quick.

Most of my curiosity was based around the shifter and c-beam TQ mount, so I can get good and close up pics of this stuff... should be interesting..

to be continued...........

Well,,, the ZF and TKO are both strong transmissions, some here on the forum are using the ZF 's successfully with up to 6XX+ RWTQ,,, in speaking with the tech people at TREMEC, they claim it took slightly over 1000 lbs/tq to break the TKO in their testing,

I see the advantages for the TKO being,

1. lower cost Clutch & FW components and more varied options for clutch and Flywheel components, i.e. Push vs Pull Clutch, bolt on TOB's etc..

2. TKO cost of repair is probably less, and I say this because I have talked with ZF Doc and for starters he gets $600-$800 to open it up to evaluate the ZF and then add shipping each way ($200 each way from INDY) plus cost of components (they dont make the ZF anymore),

3. the TKO weighs 105 lbs the ZF = 160/lbs,

4. there is a wider network of service centers,

5. and of course, no rocks in the box sound.

6. Not really an advantage but I never used the 6th gear unless i was cruising 80+ mph

I can say that I suffer from 5 and 6 so this will be a good thread to watch.

You always do a good job of detailing the highs and lows of modifications. Look forward to hearing more about this.

All parts are in my hands, so I will pull the ZF tonight and start the TKO install on Friday @ noon.

Had to Heli-Arc weld the dimple impression in my clutch fork because it cracked where it pivots on the clutch fork pivot stud and it galled up the pivot stud... should be strong now and good to go

So now you'll have coilovers AND a TKO tranny. Not much of a stock C4 anymore Larry but I'm looking forward to hearing about your finished project and the performance report. The best of luck to ya :-)

Well,, the CO's are reversible if I put the springs back in, and if I want I cna put the 4+3 back in, and I still have the original 350 block, so I could put it back top stock for @ $5000 after I have my head examined!

I am very very interested in any pics and info you can provide. Currently I'm using a zf blue tag rebuilt and strengthened by ZF doc. If i remember correct the ratios is customizeable for all the gears? #60 is a nice saving + having more options on clutches is nice too. the rocks in a can sound... oh god don't even ask how my tranny sounds with the stroker idling below 900 rpm with the pedal out.

I look at the zf as a 4 speed with an overdrive. 5th gear is a large jump from 4th and 6th is obviously for fuel economy. WIth the high rpm motor I cannot cruise below 2500 rpms or so because there is no torque down low so I don't want any overdrive.

Good luck with the swap please keep us informed !!

Not to get too far off topic, but could the ZF Doc not do anything about this? I was under the impression that his rebuilds could really help tone down this noise.
