Default egr issue?

Hello all, My 88 corvette with 383 stroker with all modified factory TPI. is starting to stall with no warning.I can let it sit a few and it will start again and stall immediately.I try to feather the pedal as it starts to die with no reaction. Now it happened tonight again except that the car had terrible emission smell from the exhaust.. It smelled like a 1970 v-8 that had been off the road for a decade.you know that eye burning ,have to pass car smell.Again I can start it and it may run a minute and die or run 10 min.I have checked it has fuel at the rail and appears to have spark. If it is under acceleration it will run longer but still dies. Can anyone point me in the right direction?!!

Disconnect your MAF sensor and see if the condition changes or stays the same

Check your fuel pressure

Doesn't sound like anything that the EGR could do to it. If you want to be certain unplug the vacuum to the valve (and plug the hose to prevent a vacuum leak). That will cause the valve to stay shut (assuming it IS shutting and not stuck open..) and eliminate any possibility of it opening and causing a problem.

I'd place my money on the MAF...

Just a question - why do you have the EGR still on the thing Anyhow?

I'd place my money on the MAF...

When the MAF in my '88 Vette went out I could hardly start it and keep it running long enough to back it into the parking spot.

Unplugging the MAF didn't help my Vette to run any better so it was pretty useless as a diagnostic method. So I swapped in the MAF from my '86 IROC-Z and she ran fine; still using that MAF today.

I suggest you pick up a used MAF from an mid-'80s F-body TPI car from a bone yard for a few $$ to see if that is the problem.

Of course you might try replacing the MAF power relay first...

With the car running you can gently tap the bottom of the MAF sensor, with or screw driver or equivalent, to see if it causes any skipping/running improvements.

If I wanted to swap from TPI to carb what would I lose in performance and fuel economy?I had to many problems getting this engine to run correctly. No one I can find knows how to get this car running.I have spent at least 1000.00 just to set timing and burn a chip and then say to me that I need to spend more to fine tune it! holly c_ _ I would like to keep the factory look but I need to drive it also. Can yall help to figure which is the best way to go.I am open for suggestions!!!! th_.https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ies/frown5.gif

I would give a shout-out to the C4 peeps in the Southest section of the country for a helping hand. You may find another C4 owner the next town over who may be willing to take a look at things for you.
