What is the best way to get the rubber boot off of the alternator nut connector without ripping it. My connector is 22+ years old and I would hate to damage it while trying to take it off to get to the nut. Do you guys have any tips on how to get this off without splitting the old rubber?
If it's baked hard as a rock. You will probably crack it trying to remove it. If the rubber is still plyable, it should come off without damaging it. I would think you could get these covers on a "Help" rack at O Riellies or AutoZone. I know restoration shops like Year One carry them.

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
If that's the original alternator the boot isn't worth saving. That's the least of it though, you will probably snap off the terminal screw trying to remove the nut.
Back in the day people used to use lacquer thinner, WD40, brake fluid, and or carb cleaner (for removal) to soften gasket/rubber material. I have used lacquer thinner and WD 40 with good results. I'm sure the rubber boot is beat from the engine bay's heat. It might bust no mater what you do.....go slow and do not use "sharp" tools...I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Good Luck!
